Just Cut the Fabric

If I had been a dragon when living in Texas, my hoard would have definitely been fabric. (Not that I'm a dragon now.) I had so much fabric that I even misplaced some of my stashes. I had fabric of varying yardage, materials, and even decades.

I'm not entirely sure why I had so much fabric, because I was honestly more likely to sew the remnants than the larger and more expensive pieces of fabric. There was always something intimidating about cutting into those big precious fabrics.

Sadly I had to part with a lot of my fabric when moving. I have collected more, but I doubt I will ever amass the collection I had previously. And I prefer it that way. One of the pieces I bought since moving here, was about a yard and a half of a fine light black linen. It makes linen I've seen in the past seem like sackcloth. This stuff is so light and delicately soft. Well it's been sitting in my stash for well over a year, and I recently had to make the decision to start a project with it or not. I wanted a slightly flowy sleeved blouse, and this piece fit the bill.

One Saturday morning I faced the decision of cutting into the fabric or letting it continue to collect dust. I did it. I cut the fabric. No tutorial. No pattern. I just didn't have the focus for these at the time. I simply measured myself, eye balled it, and hoped for the best.

And even though I hit a few snags (hee hee) it is turned out lovely.

I don't know why we do this. We are so afraid of messing up the "good stuff" that we will hoard it till the day we die. So this is me giving you permission to use your best yarn, fabric, wood, paint, metal; whatever it is. Because you have to ask yourself which is worse. Possibly "messing it up" or never getting to create anything beautifully meaningful with it.
